A patch unlocks when your phone confirms you have stepped inside the real boundary of the place. Standing at the Saint Louis Zoo puts you inside the zoo, Forest Park, Saint Louis and Missouri, so one stop can earn four patches.
Patches build toward collections and campaigns, such as National Parks and Route 66. Scout can also read the location data in your camera roll to find places you have already been, and it can plan a day of patch stops for you.
